Magnetic North makes theatre that is vibrant, articulate and individual. Led by Artistic Director Nicholas Bone, the company develops and produces plays, and create opportunities for artists to develop their creative practice by working together. Text plays a central role in the company's work, though its initial inspiration is often more abstract – previous work has been developed from sources as diverse as a number sequence, a ballet score, a set of keyboard variations and the idea of perfection. The main focus of development work is the Rough Mix programme; this is an opportunity for theatre makers to collaborate with other practitioners, try out new ideas and introduce them to an audience. The company's previous productions include The Dream Train, My Old Man, Word for Word and Swan Song.
Walden is an adaptation of Henry David Thoreau's book about his experiences living alone in the Massachusetts woods in the 1840s. The production was created by director Nicholas Bone and visual artists Sans façon (Tristan Surtees and Charles Blanc) and was originally performed in an art gallery in Edinburgh. Developed as part of the company's Rough Mix programme, Walden will be touring Scotland in late Summer 2009.
